I am starting afterschool programs near my new home in the Metrowest near Boston, MA! This spring I will be running Math Explorers at two Wellesley Public Schools – Fiske and Hunnewell. Programs are open to grades K-2 and will run for 6 weeks. Signups occur through Wellesley Parks & Rec.
What do we do in Math Explorers? We play games, solves puzzles, and have fun. This spring, we will explore probability, codes, art, and even graph theory! We don’t do worksheets or test prep. Students will use their bodies to make graphs, build strong towers with their own hands, and solve logic puzzles by acting out different roles. They will see all the amazing things that math can do, and will gain the confidence that they can do it.
How did I get here? I am a research scientist at Yale, with a PhD in Biochemistry from UC Santa Barbara. I started with outreach to my oldest son’s preschool, and soon I was designing my own math and science activities to bring to any schools I could get to. I ran afterschool math, science, and engineering programs in Connecticut schools for several years, and I’ve also organized numerous science and math outreach events at Yale. I am excited to bring my programs to a wider audience.
